What Leland yards tend to have

A lot of Leland was pine woodland not long ago. Developers often kept a line of loblolly pines along back lot lines and between houses for shade and privacy. Those trees grew up in a forest, with tall bare trunks and small crowns, and suddenly found themselves standing alone with wind on every side. Add sandy soil, a high water table near retention ponds, and roots cut during construction, and you get the classic Leland call: a 70-foot pine leaning toward a two-story house after a tropical storm.

You will also see sweetgums dropping spiky balls on patios, water oaks along older roads, river birches and red maples near ponds, crepe myrtles lining subdivision streets, and live oaks in the more mature parts of town.

Neighborhoods we hear from

Requests come from all over Leland, including large planned communities such as Brunswick Forest, Magnolia Greens, Waterford and Compass Pointe, as well as older streets off US 17 and US 74/76. In the planned communities, two things come up again and again:

  • HOA approval. The architectural committee may want a reason for removal and sometimes a replacement tree. Ask before you book.
  • Access. Narrow side yards, fences, pool screens and irrigation lines all affect how a tree comes down and what equipment can reach a stump.

Leland rules worth knowing

  • Town right-of-way and town property. The Town of Leland Tree Manual says an encroachment permit is required before anyone works on or plants trees in a town right-of-way or on town property. For a dead or dangerous town tree, the town asks residents to file a work order through Leland 311.
  • Private lots. The manual also says owners are responsible for pruning trees on private property that grow over public sidewalks and streets. Leland regulates significant trees in some development types (for example, the town code defines a significant tree as a hardwood or conifer of 24 inches DBH or more, or a dogwood, holly or other flowering tree of 8 inches or more). We did not find a general permit requirement for homeowners on typical single-family lots, but check with Leland Planning & Inspections before removing a large tree.
  • HOA rules can be stricter than the town's. Both apply.

Debris and yard waste in Leland

From the official source

The Town of Leland closed its vegetative debris drop-off center on July 1, 2023, and pointed residents to the Brunswick County convenience site on Chappell Loop Road, which accepts vegetative debris. Brunswick County charges for yard debris at its convenience centers (for example $3 per bag up to 40 gallons, and $7 to $32 for a loose quarter to full truckload), and yard waste does not belong in household trash carts. We did not find official town curbside limb pickup rules, so ask your hauler. For a tree removal, it usually makes sense to have the crew haul or chip everything as part of the price.

Common questions

Does my Leland HOA need to approve a tree removal?

Many planned communities have an architectural approval step for exterior changes, which can include removing trees. Rules differ by community, so read your covenants or ask the HOA before the crew is booked. Getting approval in writing avoids disputes later.

Who handles a dead tree on the strip by the street?

If it is a town tree in a Town of Leland right-of-way, the town asks residents to submit a request through Leland 311. Work in the town right-of-way by anyone else needs an encroachment permit. Trees along NCDOT roads follow NCDOT rules.

How far is Leland from Wilmington for a crew?
