Emergency tree service
Brunswick County
Oak Island Lighthouse, Caswell Beach
Oak Island is stricter than Wilmington: on developed property, removing any tree over 3 inches in diameter needs a town tree removal permit, and the town decides within 10 business days. Large "heritage" trees need an arborist report, and the town will not collect debris from tree services, so the crew has to haul it. The island is about 33 miles by road from downtown Wilmington. Behind the dunes, live oaks, laurel oaks, yaupon, wax myrtle and red cedar grow in a salt-pruned maritime forest. Cabbage palms and other palms line many yards, and loblolly pines stand on the higher ground and the mainland side. The Town of Oak Island, formed in 1999 when Long Beach and Yaupon Beach merged, also includes areas on the mainland side of the Intracoastal Waterway.
The town notes that the island sits close to sea level with a high water table, and minor flash flooding usually recedes within about 48 hours. Saturated sandy soil plus wind is a hard combination for shallow-rooted trees, which is why leaning and uprooted trees are common after storms here. It also matters for equipment: heavy machines can sink or rut wet yards, so jobs are sometimes timed for drier days.
From the official source
From the Town Code (Chapter 32) and the town's Tree Removal Permitting page:
The town collects yard debris by zone, placed in the right-of-way at the start of your scheduled week. Leaves and grass go in one pile, unbagged, and limbs up to 6 inches in diameter go in a separate pile, in front of your own home only. Zones 1 and 2 are collected in January, March, May, July, September and November, and zones 3 and 4 in the even months, each in set weeks. Check the Public Works page for your zone's weeks.
Check before you cut
Most important for tree work: Town Code Sec. 24-65 says debris pickup is not provided to landscapers, private tree companies or anyone paid to trim trees, who must remove the material themselves. The town also won't collect construction, demolition or lot-clearing debris, or entire trees. Any quote should include hauling.

When a storm comes through, Oak Island takes it head-on. Downed trees on lines: stay clear and report them to the power provider on your bill. Brunswick Electric (BEMC) serves Brunswick County and has a Southport & Oak Island district office, and it takes outage reports by call or text at 800-682-5309 or online. Duke Energy also serves parts of the county (Duke outages). Take photos before anything is cut, and ask the town how its permit process applies to storm-damaged trees.
