North Lord Street, Southport

Southport protects its trees more than most coastal towns. On a house lot, you need a city tree impact permit to remove a hardwood of 8 inches DBH or more or a conifer of 12 inches or more in a setback, or any tree of 30 inches or more anywhere on the lot, and replacement planting of 25% of the removed diameter usually follows. We can pass your request to a local crew that knows the process. Call (910) 543-1576.

Southport's urban maritime forest

The city calls its tree canopy an "urban maritime forest", and that is a fair description. Big live oaks shade the streets of the historic district near the waterfront, with laurel and water oaks, loblolly pines, cabbage palms, southern magnolias, red cedars, yaupon and wax myrtle filling in. Trees here deal with salt wind off the mouth of the Cape Fear River, sandy soil, and storms coming straight in from the ocean. That shapes the work: careful pruning of heavy oak limbs over roofs and streets, cleanup of storm-broken limbs, and removal of pines and water oaks that have started to decline.

Requests come from the historic district and older streets near the waterfront, and from newer neighborhoods such as Smithville Woods, Indigo Plantation and Cades Cove. Southport is roughly 28 miles by road from downtown Wilmington, about 40 to 45 minutes' drive.

Southport tree removal permits

From the official source

These points come from Southport's Unified Development Ordinance, Section 3.18 (tree protection), which the city links as its official UDO. Always confirm with the city before work starts.

  • Regulated trees: hardwoods 8 inches DBH or more, conifers 12 inches or more, and any tree 30 inches or more (specimen).
  • Existing house lots (previously platted residential lots and one- or two-family homes): a tree impact permit is needed to remove, or work in the critical root zone of, a regulated tree in any setback, and to remove a specimen tree anywhere on the lot.
  • Commercial, multifamily and major subdivision sites: a permit is needed for any protected tree anywhere on the site, and no vegetation over 3 inches DBH may be altered before a zoning or tree impact permit is issued.
  • Mitigation: 25% of the DBH removed for residential lots and one- or two-family homes, 100% for other development. When live oaks are removed, at least half the replanting must be live oak.
  • Penalties: $100 per DBH inch for illegal removal, $200 per inch for a regulated tree removed after notice, and $300 per inch for a city-owned tree, plus mitigation.
  • Applying: the city takes applications through its online permit portal. Its 2024 permit guidance listed no permit fee; confirm current fees with the city.

Storms: the UDO Administrator may waive the tree rules during a city-declared state of emergency. If a tree is down on a house, deal with safety first; see storm damage tree removal. If a tree is dead or dangerous, an arborist statement can help support the permit.

Yard waste in Southport

The City of Southport's contractor collects yard debris every Wednesday. Per the city's residential waste page, you can set out up to two approved resident-owned 95-gallon carts, up to 15 paper bags (no plastic), or up to four tied bundles no longer than 5 feet and no heavier than 50 pounds, in any reasonable combination. Vacant lots are not serviced. A whole tree is far beyond those limits, so it usually makes sense to have the crew chip and haul the wood.

Common questions

Do I need a permit to cut down a tree in Southport?

Often, yes. Under UDO Sec. 3.18, on an existing house lot you need a tree impact permit to remove a regulated tree (hardwood 8 inches DBH or more, conifer 12 inches or more) in any setback, and to remove any specimen tree of 30 inches or more anywhere on the lot. Ask the city before removing any tree over 3 inches; routine pruning and small underbrush are generally fine.

Will I have to plant replacement trees?

If the removal needs a permit, usually. For vacant residential lots and one- or two-family homes, mitigation is 25% of the DBH removed. Where live oaks are removed, at least half of the replanting must be live oak.

What is the fine for removing a tree without a permit?

The UDO lists $100 per DBH inch, $200 per inch for a regulated tree removed after notice, and $300 per inch for a city-owned tree, plus mitigation.

What about storm damage?

The UDO Administrator may waive the tree rules during a city-declared state of emergency. Take photos before anything is cut and check with the city.
