Good trimming in coastal Carolina means removing dead and weak wood, lifting limbs off roofs and driveways, and shaping trees without topping them. For most trees around Wilmington, late winter is the best time for structural pruning, while dead or hanging limbs should come out whenever you see them. Palm trimming

Sabal palms (palmettos), windmill palms and pindo palms are common in yards from Wrightsville Beach to Oak Island. The mistake to avoid is the "hurricane cut", where most of the green fronds are stripped off. UF/IFAS Extension advises against it: green fronds feed the palm, and over-pruned palms are weaker, not stronger, in wind. Their rule of thumb is to remove only fully brown, dead fronds, plus seed stalks if you want, and never cut above the 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock line.

Palm trimming cost

HomeGuide estimates palm trimming at an average of $100 to $650 per palm, and $90 to $700 in North and South Carolina. Height is the big driver. These are published estimates; a local quote can be higher or lower.

Palm trimming cost by height (HomeGuide estimate, per tree)
Palm heightEstimated range
Up to 15 ft$50 to $200
15 to 30 ft$75 to $400
30 to 60 ft$150 to $900

Several palms on one visit usually cost less per tree. Neglected palms carrying many seasons of dead fronds, or palms next to a pool cage or power line, cost more.

Live oak pruning

Live oaks are the trees people in Wilmington are proudest of, and the ones most often damaged by bad cuts. They spread wide and low, so most live oak work is clearance: lifting limbs over a roof, street or driveway, and removing deadwood and crossing branches. Heavy "lion tailing", where all the inner growth is stripped and only tufts are left at the ends, makes long limbs more likely to fail. Ask the crew to explain which limbs they plan to cut and why.

Check before you cut

Large live oaks also carry legal protection in many places here. Pruning is not the same as removal, but if work could seriously harm a big live oak, check the tree rules guide and, in Southport or Oak Island, the town pages first.

Crepe myrtle pruning (and why not to top it)

From the official source

The Brunswick County office of N.C. Cooperative Extension calls the common practice of cutting crepe myrtles back to stubs "crape murder". Topping like this leads to weak branching, shorter or delayed bloom, ugly knuckles and more insect and disease trouble. Their advice:

  • Remove dead, damaged, crossing branches and sprouts from the base at any time.
  • Do structural pruning in late winter, when you can see the branch framework.
  • If a crepe myrtle is too tall, use reduction cuts back to a side branch rather than cutting through the middle of limbs.
  • If it is always too big for the spot, the long-term fix is a smaller cultivar.

Best time to trim trees in coastal NC

In brief, with the full chart in our season-by-season pruning guide:

  • Late winter (roughly January to early March): the best window for structural pruning of most shade trees and crepe myrtles. Leaves are off deciduous trees and crews are less busy.
  • Spring and early summer, before peak storm season: clear deadwood and limbs over the roof. Hurricane season starts June 1.
  • Any time: broken, hanging or dead limbs that threaten people or the house.
  • Palms: remove dead fronds as they brown. Avoid heavy cutting of green fronds in any season.

Shrubs and hedges

Many crews will also cut back overgrown wax myrtles, ligustrum, Indian hawthorn or holly hedges while they are on site, which can be cheaper than a separate landscaping visit. HomeGuide lists hedge trimming at around $25 to $60 per 10 feet of hedge as a national estimate. Mention any hedges when you ask for a quote.

Common questions

Is trimming the same as pruning?

People use the words interchangeably. In practice, trimming usually means shaping and clearance, such as limbs off the roof or over the driveway, while pruning means cuts made for the tree's health and structure. A good job does both.

How much of a tree can be cut at once?

Less than most people expect. Taking too much live canopy in one visit stresses the tree and triggers weak sprouts. If a tree needs a lot of reduction, it is often better spread over more than one visit.

Will trimming help my trees survive a hurricane?

Removing dead wood, weak limbs and branches over the roof lowers the risk of damage. Over-thinning or topping can make things worse. There is no trim that makes a tree storm-proof.

Do I need a permit to trim a tree?

Pruning on your own lot generally is not the same as removal, but rules differ. Trees in a city right-of-way, in a Wilmington historic district or under an HOA can have extra steps. Our rules guide links the official pages.
